“God reigns over the nations; God is seated on His holy throne.” (Psalm 47:8 NKJV)
I stayed awake as long as I could to see the final results of the 2024 Presidential Election. Like many, I refreshed the page on my phone constantly to see who was in the lead and by how much. Hope one moment, and nerves the next, only to fall asleep because the results took all night. People gathered and stayed awake all across the nation to watch and see history being unraveled. Who would be the 47th President of the United States?
And it came across my mind that when I first voted three terms ago at 18 years old, I felt such purpose that I too was changing history. That’s what these elections are all about. How do we want the pages of the American story to turn? What chapter will we decide is next?
“There are many plans in a man’s heart, nevertheless the Lord’s counsel—that will stand”. (Proverbs 19:21)
Regardless of who won this election, there is only One who reigns over all the nations and sits on a holy throne. And He is not anxious. Whatever the outcome would have been, there is nothing that can change who is in ultimate control.
My dog woke me up at 3 am this morning when I realized my husband and I both fell asleep on the couch waiting for the results. He woke up too and I said, “Look,” as I showed the phone to him. Both our eyes widened with surprise that the Republicans had won all three categories: the House, the Senate, and the 47th Presidential Office. We joined the rest of the nation in sharing a moment that this historical election came to an end.
Wherever you stand today, on one side of the voting ballot or the other, many are without hope because hope does not come from a president. It comes from Jesus. I heard a pastor say, “Politicians are not going to save our country. Elections are not going to save our country. Jesus Christ is the only One that can save our country.”
“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)
God is just as much concerned about the well-being of a nation as He is with the well-being of an individual. He cares for the land. And He cares for the soul. He always makes it about the one, before He makes it about anything more. Personal agendas must submit to the lordship of Jesus Christ.
Jesus understood humanity was limited in their comprehension of the kingdom of God at work on heaven and on earth. He understood their differences and experiences. And He offered more. He offered more to the lost, fearful, hungry, poor, and rich person than any government could provide. Marked by righteousness, He offered more than any president could promise.
That is our hope today and for the next 4 years until the Lord tarries. This is a moment in history where people are hurting, searching, doubting, fearing, and need what Jesus provides more than a president. The kingdom of God is here and now, available to the Democrat, Republican, Green Party, Libertarian, and Independent voter.
From gas and grocery prices, to a female presidential candidate, to constitutional amendments, this election intrigued so many. Whether you are rejoicing in God’s work today or mourning the future you wanted, there is more. Today is an opportunity to see the gospel transcend the times we are living and invite us into the real war going on in Heaven. God is fighting for the sinner’s heart, whether that is the President of the United States or the common man. We turn the page knowing that our vote mattered – for the voiceless, the lost, and the hurting. Our voice mattered in the policies shared nationwide and the policies within city grounds. This next chapter is unfolding. One term is coming to an end and a new one is beginning. Yet the story of God’s love for you hasn’t stopped.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the victory that is always Yours. No one can rob You of Your authority. You are matchless, wonderful, and beautiful. Have Your hand on our land and on our hearts today. Open our hearts for the “more” than Jesus provides. May our hope not be in an election, but in You. Grant peace to the restless today. Peace that comes from You and You alone. Lastly, may righteousness sweep this nation and find favor in Your sight.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
