“At that time the Lord separated the tribe of Levi to bear the ark of the covenant of the Lord, to stand before the Lord to minister to Him and to bless in His name, to this day. Therefore Levi has no portion nor inheritance with his brethren; the Lord is his inheritance, just as the Lord your God promised him.” Deuteronomy 10:8-9
God set apart Levi and his tribe for a reason and very special purpose. Levi had to be holy and spiritually fit to be worthy of the work of the Lord. His tribe was called to bear the ark of the covenant of God. That very responsibility demanded holiness and worthiness. Not only that, but Levi had to accept that he couldn’t chase worldly pursuits, for he had to be filled with a godly pursuit for his life. His direction on earth for success was not horizontal, what could be measured by degrees, possessions, or property. It was a vertical direction, aimed at the things above that please the Father. He had to see things for what they truly are in the lens of eternity – white from black, right from wrong, holy from sinful. Levi had a high calling.
In Levi’s case, he didn’t receive the inheritance like his brothers did. Rather, God kept Levi’s inheritance for something greater. The Lord Himself was Levi’s inheritance. The Lord was his portion. While earthly success is great, it is only for a. moment. God was giving Levi something better. Imagine having the Lord offer Himself as your portion and inheritance. Imagine truly embodying the love and gift of God’s presence and blessing in your life. Nothing on this side of heaven could measure up to the depth, height, and width of the wonders of God Himself.
God’s people are a remnant, few in number and few in people who give their wholehearted yes to His divine purpose. Not many see the Lord as the greater portion. But He is. We were made for more than what this faulty world teaches and glorifies. Do you want your life to count? Do you want to live for something greater than yourself? Let the Lord set you apart for His high calling. The Lord Himself is your portion.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Forgive me when I fall short of the calling You have given me. Fill me with Your strength to be able to withstand worldly pressures and fill me with wisdom for the things I ought to pursue. Thank You for Your endless grace.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
